Every year (this is the 4th) Allagash celebrates the diversity of saisons by celebrating Saison Day with an event featuring their portfolio of saisons/farmhouse beers, poured alongside selections from their brewery friends from around the world. In Chicago, Saison Day gets hosted by the The Hopleaf, our bastion of Belgian and Belgian-style beers, and a bar that prides itself on educational experiences for its guests.
Saison means “season” in French, and these beers were brewed seasonally, in the winter, stored, and drank through the hot summer months. Farmers used whatever grains they had on hand, meaning besides barley, wheat, spelt, and other grains may have played a role in the beer style.
